Thirsty Thoughts

The other day my mother made an observation: "If you don't know God, it's probably because you're not thirsty yet." She continued on in the conversation without giving it a second thought. But that's a pretty profound observation, really.

Jesus invites the Samaritan Woman at Jacob's well to experience true relief for thirst in John 4:14.

Living Water for a woman the disciples absolutely couldn't believe he would talk to. Interesting right? Jesus never selected anyone profound to take the message. It was always some nameless nobody. Some smelly fisherman, or unpopular tax man. He had a knack for finding the ones like you and me. The ones everyone overlooked, simply because we're willing. That's all. The big qualification: being thirsty and willing. Seems to me He chooses ones thinking, the more flawed the better. How better to display the Father's love for us?

If anyone ever tells you that in order to understand or follow God you have to be qualified, educated, eloquent, a religious authority... well, they're just plain wrong. He just wants you to wake up and realize how thirsty you are, and how much He wants to nourish and replenish you.

And the funny thing about thirst is, sometimes in order to be thirsty God has to take you someplace you'll get thirsty. Like a dry, harsh desert. That's where I was lead.

Maybe that's why in our suffering we should rejoice. If you're not thirsty, you cannot be satisfied. Thanks for the thirsty times because it makes the drink that much sweeter and dearer.
